Which Aosta Valley ski resort should you choose?
Six areas, one pass, and no single right answer — but there is a right answer for you.

- —One regional pass covers every resort in the Aosta Valley — around 800 km of piste on close to 200 lifts.
- —The valleys are not lift-linked to each other. The pass joins them; a driver covers the gaps.
- —Two lift-served crossings leave the country on skis: Cervinia into Zermatt (Switzerland) and La Thuile into La Rosière (France).
- —Gressoney to Alagna is a third linked crossing, but it stays inside Italy — into Piedmont, not another country.
- —Zermatt is not covered by the ordinary regional pass; it needs the international product or an extension.
Most people arriving in the Aosta Valley pick one resort and stay in it all week. That is the single biggest mistake available here, and it is worth understanding why before choosing where to sleep.
Why does one pass change the decision?
The regional pass covers every resort in the region on one ticket. That means the question stops being "which resort is best" and becomes "which resort is best on Tuesday, given the wind" — because you are not paying again to change your mind. Which resort is the most snow-sure?
Breuil-Cervinia sits high, and its season runs long — late October into early May in a normal year. The altitude is the point: when lower areas are struggling in a dry January, Cervinia is usually still skiing well. It is also where the lift-served crossing into Zermatt leaves from, which is a genuine day out rather than a novelty, subject to wind and the last connection home. source
The trade-off is character. Cervinia is a functional ski town built for skiing, and it does not pretend otherwise. If the evenings matter as much as the mornings, look elsewhere.
Where are the best mountain lunches?
Courmayeur, without much argument. Two distinct ski areas, useful tree skiing when the light goes flat, the Brenva face of Mont Blanc standing over the whole thing, and a scattering of mountain restaurants worth planning the day around. It is compact enough to know properly in a day and varied enough not to feel small by Thursday. source
Where do you go for quiet and distance?
Monterosa Ski — Champoluc, Gressoney and Alagna strung beneath the Monte Rosa glaciers. Long distances, short queues, and when conditions and ability line up, some of the best lift-accessed off-piste terrain in the Alps. It is the least crowded of the big options and the one that rewards a guide most. source
What about families?
Pila is reached by cable car straight out of Aosta, which means you can stay in a working Roman city with restaurants and a supermarket, and still be on snow in twenty minutes. Wide, sunny, easy-to-read pistes. For a mixed group where not everybody skis, it solves more problems than a purpose-built station does.
So where should you actually sleep?
If it is one base for a week and you want the widest daily choice, Aosta or Courmayeur. If snow reliability outranks everything, Cervinia. If you are chasing terrain and quiet, base in the Monterosa valleys. And if the forecast is uncertain when you book, base centrally and let the mornings decide — that is what the pass is for.
Questions people ask
Do you need a car to ski the Aosta Valley?
Not necessarily, but the valleys are not linked to each other, so moving between resorts means driving. A driver or a hire car turns one pass into six areas; without transport you are effectively choosing a single resort for the week.
Can you ski from Italy to Switzerland in a day?
Yes. The lift-served crossing from Breuil-Cervinia to Zermatt is a full high-altitude day and returns the same afternoon when conditions and lift operations allow. Carry a passport or national ID, and note that Zermatt needs the international pass or an extension rather than the ordinary regional one.
When is the Aosta Valley at its best for skiing?
February is deep winter and also the busiest, with school holidays pushing demand. March brings longer days and often good snow high up. Late season favours the higher areas, and Cervinia in particular holds its conditions longest.
Is the Aosta Valley cheaper than France or Switzerland?
The lift pass gap is smaller than most people expect. The larger difference is accommodation, food and everyday spending, where the Italian side is generally cheaper than comparable Swiss resorts.
